IEEE In the World
As a student in UIC, if you are studying an ECE or CS major, you can apply for a student IEEE membership.
IEEE mission statement is to promote the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electro and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession. We'd like to think that our chapter's mission is some thing similar, but on a more local scale of course.
If you read through our college's professor's resumes, you'll see that more than a few are IEEE fellows. An IEEE fellowship is the highest grade of membership, attained through nomination by peers and approval by the IEEE Board of Directors for distinction in the profession. So we're in good company.
IEEE is usually known for being the leading developer of global standards in a broad range of industries. One of the best known is the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard. Next time you're shopping for computer stuff, take a look at the wireless routers section; you'll see the IEEE standard written on the box.
Almost every leading university in the world that teaches electrical engineering has its IEEE student chapter. If you want to get a feeling of how professional an IEEE Student Chapter can be, check out our links page for select IEEE chapters around the world.
