Video Game Reviews

Over the last decade, the video game market has expanded beyond anyone's expectations. This can be mostly attributed to the growing number of college students playing video games in their dorms. Today, to own at least one system is becoming standard. One of the most important abilities a "dormer" should possess is to play video games well enough to be competitive with peers. However, it is even more important that one knows which games to play, or risk losing the respect of those peers and their competition. For the benefit of those who are clueless about which games to play, here are some quick reviews of N64 games. Note: ratings are based on a 1 to 10 scale, where 10 is a perfect score.

South Park 64

Akklaim hits it big by bringing everyone's favorite cartoon series to the at home console. Join Stan, Kyle, Eric, and Kenny as they try to save the world from the likes of turkeys, robots, evil toys, and aliens.

The Breakdown:

Graphics: Utilizing the new N64 expansion ram pack, South Park 64 is able to produce 3D animation unlike any other seen before. The game looks almost like a complete replica of the cartoon series. It is nearly flawless. 9

Gameplay: Although the game has almost no slow down and the graphics are smooth, the control for the game is very difficult to master, especially with the N64 controller. 7

Sound: The sound effects are amusing at first, but grow tiresome because of the limited amounts of them. The music is just plain bad. 5

Lasting Ability: The 4 player head to head mode of this game makes it great for parties or just having some friendly competition. However, the game is very short and very monotonous. It just gets too repetitive to hold any interest in the long run. 6

Overall: 6.75

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Luke Skywalker and his rebels are back in Lucas Arts masterpiece Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, which figures to be the last game about the original Star Wars Trilogy. Select from up to 7 crafts including the Millennium Falcon as you battle the evil empire in hopes of defeating the evil Moss Verdon. Fly as both Skywalker or Wedge Antilles!

The Breakdown:

Graphics: Absolutely perfect. The N64 expansion pack must have been designed for this game. Donít bother playing it without it. 10

Gameplay: The controls are very simple to learn and their is very little slowdown. The game runs very smoothly, even though it is fast paced. 10

Sound: As is the case with most Star Wars games, the soundtrack of this game is superb. The addition of Mark Hamel's voice adds to the realism of the game. 10

Lasting Ability: Although the game is very short, the use of the medal system to earn bonus levels keeps advanced players interested longer. The lack of a multiplayer option hurts though. 7

Overall: 9.25

Madden 99

John Madden football is back, and this time there's reason for football fans to get pumped up. This time around, Madden is fully licensed by the NFLPA and has the complete rosters of all 30 NFL teams. This is by far the best console football game to come out...ever!!!

The Breakdown:

Graphics: Although Madden came out before the expansion pack was available, it can definitely hold its own. It is by far the best graphics of any football game for a home console ever. 9

Gameplay: Their is a little slow down, but not enough to stop you from having a good time while playing it. The controls are fairly easy to learn too. 7

Sound: Absolutely terrible. The music is horrible and the sound effects are not real. They seem to have also lost the only thing that worked for them in the last Madden game, the commentary--Where did it go? 4

Lasting Ability: This is a game that if you play it a year or two later, you can still enjoy it. The new franchise option was a great call by EA Sports and allows you to manage for a 15 year career and sign free agents. The multiplayer option leads to hours of fun with your friends without getting sick of the game. 10

Overall: 7.5
