ECE 523 - Advanced Antenna Engineering

Description: Credit 4. Radiation from helix and spiral; aperture antennas; linear and planar array synthesis; Hallen's and other methods for impedance; design of Array Feed; and reflector and lens antennas.

Prerequisites: ECE 421 and ECE 520


1. Review of antenna parameters, theorems and other fundamentals
2. Radiation for wire antennas

a. Radiation characteristics of monopole, dipole and helix

3. Aperture antennas

a. Radiation from slots, horns and patches

4. Linear array synthesis

a. Dolph-Chebyshev, Taylor, Bayliss, convolution and other optimal and near optimal methods of synthesis

5. Planar array synthesis

a. Synthesis of rectangular, hexagonal and circular arrays via separable and non-separable distribution techniques
such as Bayliss, convolution, Taylor and Tseng-Cheng

6. Antenna impedance

a. Hallen's and other integral equations for current distribution on a cylindrical antenna
b. Self and mutual impedance
c. Numerical methods

7. Design of array feeds

a. Design of feed structures for various antennas including dipoles, slot and patch antenna arrays

8. Reflector and lens antennas

a. Geometrical optics
b. Parabolic and paraboloidal reflector antennas
c. Dual reflector antennas
d. Dielectric lenses such as Maxwell fish-eye and Luneburg lenses
