Jord Calmon, Senator from Corellia

Corellian Senator Jord Calmon

Thirty-two years before the Battle of Yavin and at a time where Palpatine's Empire did not exist, the Galactic Republic was governed by a Senate which mandated the laws which the galaxy ran by. Different senators represented different groups, some represented single planets, others entire sectors, and still others represented consortiums such as the Trade Federation. This particular gent, Jord Calmon is the representative of the planet Corellia.

Jord Calmon was once a member of the Corellian Defense Force and served during the Faux-Selonian Uprising that was stirred up by the Trade Federation 30 years before the Federation's blockade of Naboo. The Federation paid off a Selonian militia group to cause trouble in the Corellian system (of which both Corellia and Selonia are a part of) in the name of civil rights abuse against the non-humans of the system. This was just an attempt by the Trade Federation to intercede themselves into the Corellian system and take over the shipping and transport systems and to exert authority within the system. Jord fought in several battles with the Fed-backed Selonias and led his battalion in fending off the militia from devastating Corellia's Coronet City. This helped bolt Calmon's military career until the point he became a general in the CDF, eventually leading him to governmental positions and finally as the planet's representative to the Galactic Senate.

As a member of the Senate, Calmon at first worked hard to help make the laws governed for the galaxy just and right. But over time like many of the other Senators, Jord became corrupt, greedy, and paranoid over security. This led Jord to have a Senate Cam Droid refitted with a hidden blaster to watch over him. Eventually he fell in line with Senator Palpatine of Naboo and became a heavy supporter of Palpatine's and voted him in to the Chancellor's chair when Valorum was removed from power. Though Calmon did not initially know of Palpatine's dark intentions and hidden identity, Jord did help Palpatine succeed in passing many of the policies that led to the formation of the Empire. Less than 15 years later, Emperor Palpatine assigned Jord back to his homeworld of Corellia to serve as overseer of the Corellian sector. This however did not last long, as Jord Calmon was killed during an attack by the Rebellion, sometime after this Corellia slowly began its separation from the Empire.

This figure was made for the FFURG 100th Critique of the Week celebration for the week of Christmas 2000. This COTW was a conglomeration of different customizer's interpretation of on-screen and off-screen senators from the Senate scenes in Episode 1 and I was happy to supply an entrant. Jord Calmon's name came about by using variants on the names of Star Trek: The Next Generation's Geordi LaForge (his figure was sitting on my monitor when I came up with the name!) and that of my friend Cal (thank me later Cal :) ). The figure was made from parts from Xyber 9's Ikira, Episode 1's Senator Palpatine, and POTF2's Bespin Lando and Commtech Han. The head comes from Ikira and had a liberal dose of a fleshtone mix applied to it with a creation of new eyes and a repaint of the hair and beard from white to gray. The torso and legs come from Palpy, the torso was painted royal blue and although you cannot see it on the scan, the legs had bloodstripes painted along the sides. The arms were painted the same royal blue as the torso for a matching set, with the cuffs painted gold and the CT Han hands glued on. After the body parts were put together, I added the vest/pauldron from the Ikira figure and painted its trim gold and added some colored badges. To finish things up, I repainted the senate cam-droid that came with Palpatine an olive green.

Here are some more pictures from the Critique of the Week produced by Dan Curto for all the senators.
