Some time after the Battle of Endor, Wedge Antilles reformed the Rebel Alliance's renowned starfighter group, Rogue Squadron. To handle all the requisitioning needs of the squad, Starfighter Command, assigned a protocol droid numbered M-3P0 to the unit. Within time, the droid began exhibiting odd behavioral patterns which suggested it was being used by the Empire to spy on the Rogues, but instead it was learned that the droid had been evolving due to its odd combination of circuitry and parts. Renamed Emtrey, the box-shaped headed droid served gallantly for the Rogues throughout their tenure, constantly able to get the supplies so desperately needed by the squad. Emtrey first appeared in Michael Stackpole's 1st X-Wing novel, Rogue Squadron.
Being a 3P0 unit, Emtrey was designed using a POTF2 Wave 1 C-3P0 body. I removed the head of C-3P0, then proceed to paint the body a flat black, leaving only the wired midsection untouched. I wanted the body to have a used and disheveled look to it, so in some areas, such as the front circular panel above the midsection, I smudged and "dented" the paint job. At some point in the X-Wing series, Emtrey has his left arm removed, I wanted to have this available on my figure, so I removed the left arm before painting and took out the small pin that held the arm to the body. Now with a slight tug, the arm pops right off. For Emtrey's head I used an extra POTF2 Death Star Gunner head left over from the creation of my Death Star Trooper custom. To give the head a "boxy" look, I sanded down the front end, smoothing out the protrusion that once existed there. To distinct the head from the DS Gunner, I painted the visor line red, so now the head actually resembles the vintage POTF Death Star Gunner figure. Attaching the head to the body, Emtrey is complete.
