About Us and IEEE

IEEE in the world

IEEE Student Chapter is part of the international IEEE non-profit organization. IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and it is the world’s largest technical professional organization. IEEE is not only for electronics engineers, but for all related sciences; it is a major publisher of scientific journals and conferences.

As a student in UIC, if you are studying an ECE or CS major, you can apply for a student IEEE membership.

IEEE mission statement is to promote the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electro and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession. We'd like to think that our chapter's mission is some thing similar, but on a more local scale of course.

If you read through our college's professor's resumes, you'll see that more than a few are IEEE fellows. An IEEE fellowship is the highest grade of membership, attained through nomination by peers and approval by the IEEE Board of Directors for distinction in the profession. So we're in good company.

IEEE is usually known for being the leading developer of global standards in a broad range of industries. One of the best known is the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard. Next time you're shopping for computer stuff, take a look at the wireless routers section; you'll see the IEEE standard written on the box.

Almost every leading university in the world that teaches electrical engineering has it's IEEE student chapter. If you want to get a feeling of how professional an IEEE Student Chapter can be, check out our links page for selected IEEE chapters around the world.

Becoming a Member

Most of our activities are open to all UIC students and all can subscribe to our servlist.

Students who want to become general members of our branch need to send their name, academic standing (ie year, major), and a personal statement to our VP, and come to one of our meetings. A student who is a general member can have his details posted on our website and will have priority to events that have limited space such as lab tours and workshops.

National members can become officers. By becoming an officer a student can gain leadership experience and great networking.

Starting from the semester of Fall 07 we plan to try out a new approach for our chapter's administration: we will vote for president and VP every semester. We hope that by rotating the positions of president and VP more frequently, making their experience available to more students, we will motivate students challenge themselves. Also, by being president for one semester, students have a shorter period to prove their leadership qualities and will hopefully work harder to do so.

Our Guide Lines

We try to make things simple, so we can offer continuous action all year round. We want to communicate our students and College of Engineering. Making big events is important but time consuming, and it blocks a whole semester.

Our web page is our major tool. Although few student branches manage to create a very impressive web page, the problem with impressive web pages is that they are hard to maintain and hence doomed to fail after few semesters because apt web designers are in short supply. That is why our web page is simple, yet informative. We try to updated it daily with content, nothing more than simple HTML and clean coding.
