Q: How do I download and print
the syllabus and the lecture notes?
A: If you use PCs,
I recommend downloading and printing the pdf files.
Here goes the steps:
For Windows 95:
To download and print
a pdf file :
-
log in
-
start Netscape
-
click the 'Start' button
-
choose 'Programs'
-
choose 'ADN Internet Tools'
-
select 'Netscape Gold 3.01'
-
in netscape, at the line 'Netsite' , type in the URL: "http://www.eecs.uic.edu/~dutt/courses/eecs265/eecs265.html"
and hit enter
-
in the webpage, click the pdf file you want to download
-
then click the 'Save File' button
-
when a box pops up, make sure that the line 'save in' is 'C:'
-
if not, change it to drive C:
-
select the directory to save the file you'll download by double-clicking
the directory 'Temp'
-
jot down the name of the file you're about to download, then hit enter
-
Once downloaded successfully, start Acrobat Reader:
-
click 'Start' button
-
highlight 'Programs'
-
highlight 'Adobe Acrobat'
-
select 'Acrobat Reader 3.0'
-
in Acrobat Reader, choose 'File' to open the pull-down menu
-
select 'Open' to open the file you've downloaded
-
at the line 'look in:', make sure that the drive letter [C:] is shown
-
if, not, click the arrow head and use scroll bar to change it to [C:]

then double click the directory 'Temp' in which you've stored your file
-
the name of the file should appear. Highlight the file and click 'Open'

in Acrobat Reader, select 'File' to open a sub-menu and then choose 'print' and hit enter to print the file
For Windows 3.1:
To download and print
a pdf file :

log in
-
start Netscape
-
locate the 'Main Menu' folder
-
double click 'Netscape Navigator Gold or Netscape 2.0 (2.0 is faster)' icon

in netscape, at the line 'location' , type in the URL: "http://www.eecs.uic.edu/~dutt/courses/eecs265/eecs265.html"
and hit enter

in the webpage, click the pdf file you're going to download
-
then click the 'Save File...' button
-
when a box pops up, jot down the default name (as shown in 'File Name:') of the file you're about to download
-
now change to the directory 'Temp' at drive C by typing 'c:\temp' at 'File Name:' Press enter and it will take you there.

retype the filename you've just copied at 'File Name:' and hit enter.

Once downloaded successfully, start Acrobat Reader:

locate the 'Adobe Acrobat 3.0' folder and click it open
-
double click 'Acrobat Reader 3.0' icon

in Acrobat Reader, choose 'File' to open the pull-down menu

select 'Open' to open the file you've downloaded

at the line 'look in:', make sure that the drive letter [C:] is shown

SHORTCUT: at the line 'File Name:', you may simply type 'c:\temp\filename.pdf' (replace filename.pdf with the name of the file you've just downloaded) and hit enter

in Acrobat Reader, select 'File' to open a sub-menu and then choose 'print' and hit enter to print the file
But if you use prefer using Sun Stations,
you should download the postscript files.
Here are the steps:

log in

start Netscape
-
type 'netscape &' in a window ('&' means setting the new job to
run in background)

in Netscape, at the line 'location', type in "http://www.eecs.uic.edu/~dutt/courses/eecs265/eecs265.html"
and hit enter

browse the page and click the ps file you want to download
-
jot down the name of the file you're about to download
-
choose 'ok' to get the file
-
when done, go back to the window by moving the mouse pointer over it
-
type 'lpr -Pps filename.ps' and hit enter to print the file
NOTE #1: replace filename.ps with the name of the file you've
just download
e.g. type 'lpr -Pps lect1.ps' to print the lecture notes #1.
NOTE #2: beware that in UNIX everything is case-sensitive
