Configuring your mail reader for new mail machine:

How to set up SPAM ASSASSIN

For Web Mail

To use web mail, go to http://mail.ece.uic.edu. It again will question the certificate, click yes to accept and continue to log in.

If you want to use SSL with Eudora you need to.

1)    You need to open Eudora and go to tools then options

2)    Under getting started you need to check allow authentication

3)    Go to checking mail and make sure under secure sockets it says Required, Alternate Port.

4)    Incoming mail settings can be left alone.

5)    Sending Mail you need to check allow authentication and make sure under secure sockets it also says required alternate port.

When you first try to connect to read your mail Eudora will complain about the certificate saying that it canŐt verify the server this is because our certificates are self-signed.  It will ask you if you want to accept it in the future sessions, you should click yes. Then you need to go to Tools, Options, Checking Mail and click on Last SSL Info. That will open another box showing the failed SSL attempted. Click on Certificate Information Manager, Click Add to Trusted then done. Click OK, Click OK again and you can now try to check mail again, and now it should not complain about certificate any more.

SSL stands for secure socket layer, which encrypts your mail session so that your password and mail is not sent in plain text. This is an added security feature with our new machine. If you prefer not to take advantage of this feature you need to change the two places where we checked Required Alternate Port to Never, but leave allow authentication this will allow you to read and send mail from any machine, not just from ECE machines has it is the case now.

If you want to use SSL with Outlook Express:

1)    Go to tools – accounts – mail – properties

2)    Under servers tab check my server requires authentication.

3)    Click on settings and use same settings as incoming mail, click ok.

4)    Under advanced tab check outgoing and incoming server requires SSL

5)    Change port for outgoing SMTP to 465 incoming port will change when box is   checked, click apply, then ok.

6)    If you do not want to use SSL leave port for smtp at 25 and for pop 110 and imap 143. Keep box under servers tab checked for servers require authentication, this will allow you to send mail through non-ece machines.

Again, when you first try to connect you will get a warning message about the certificate click yes to continue.
